Who We Are

Volunteers have long been used at the library for regular tasks, such as putting books in order, and for periodic jobs, such as working the book sales. And those volunteers are certainly still very important and needed.

However, the expansion of our services requires additional types of volunteers. The development of a Homework Help program for teens at every library location is an immediate goal, as is enhancing all the early literacy spaces. Already the library is offering cutting-edge technology workshops and classes of all kinds: basic computer skills,  job search skills, and how to start a business.

Volunteers are key to the success of these programs. For example, mentors are needed to support teen programs and the tech savvy are needed to teach computer classes. We look forward to working with you.

What We Do

Misson Statement: Anchorage Public Library provides resources to enrich the lives and empower the future of our diverse community, while preserving the past for generations to come.

While Anchorage Public Library is continuing its traditional roles, such as being a free source of all kinds of books, the library is expanding its services in ways that might surprise you. Remember the Anchorage Community School program that offered classes of all kinds, usually taught by volunteer experts in area schools that were open to all for a small fee? APL is stepping into the void left by the elimination of community schools with a goal, as it says in our mission statement, of enriching the lives and empowering the future of our diverse community. We are actively developing projects that provide support such community initiatives as United Way's 90% by 2020 and the Alaska Economic Development Council's Live. Work. Play.

With the renovation of Loussac, we will be able to offer more opportunities to learn, share, teach and collaborate, using advanced technology and traditional methods; more spaces for community gathering, meeting facilitation and group learning.  But we're not waiting for Loussac's remodeling to start providing these much needed services to area residents.
